The Lion King is a musical based on the 1994 Walt Disney Studios animated feature of the same name with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical debuted on July 8, 1997 in Minneapolis at the Orpheum Theatre and was an instant success before premiering on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater on October 15, 1997. By September 2014, The Lion King became the top-earning title in box-office history for both stage productions and films, surpassing the record previously held by The Phantom of the Opera. The Lion King musical has grossed nearly $8.1 billion as of 2017.
The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a young lion who is to succeed his father, Mufasa, as King of the Pride Lands. Trouble arises after Simba's paternal uncle Scar murders Mufasa and manipulates Simba into thinking he was responsible. Simba flees into exile out of desperation and grief. While his Uncle Scar rules with an iron paw, Simba grows up beyond the Savannah, living with two wastrels and by a philosophy of "No worries for the rest of your days". But when his past comes to haunt him, the young prince must decide his fate... Will he remain an outcast or return to challenge his uncle and take his place in the Circle of Life as the rightful King?
